This article is about the passive tanking specialization ability. For other uses, see Vengeance (disambiguation).

  • Each time you take damage, you gain 1.5% of the unmitigated damage taken as attack power for 20 sec.

Vengeance was one of the passive abilities granted to characters choosing a tanking specialization. Its purpose was to increase damage, and thus threat, for tanks in order to compete with the increased DPS gained in later tier end-game content. It did this by granting a percentage of damage taken as attack power for a limited period.

Vengeance was a bonus provided to all tanking specializations, ie Blood Death knights, Guardian Druids (in Ability racial bearform [Bear Form]), Brewmaster Monks, Protection Paladins and Protection Warriors (in Ability warrior defensivestance [Defensive Stance]). In general, a tanking specialization was required for Vengeance to be granted. However non-Guardian Druids could gain Vengeance in Ability racial bearform [Bear Form] by selecting the Spell holy blessingofagility [Heart of the Wild] talent.

In addition to the specialization requirement, Druids and Warriors needed to be in their tanking forms, namely Ability racial bearform [Bear Form] and Ability warrior defensivestance [Defensive Stance] respectively. Changing to a different form (with the exception of Ability druid catform [Cat Form]) or stance would prevent additional Vengeance from being gained, but not cancel the existing stacks of Vengeance. However Ability druid catform [Cat Form] was a specific exception to this and would cause the Vengeance effect to be cancelled.

Class-specific abilities[]

Each tanking spec had its own version of Vengeance:

Notes[]

  • Attack power gained from Vengeance was capped at the player's maximum health.
  • Vengeance was not triggered by receiving damage from other players.
  • The Vengeance buff was an Enrage effect and could be dispelled accordingly.

Patch changes[]

  • Warlords of Draenor Patch 6.0.2 (2014-10-14): Removed. Replaced with Spell shadow charm [Resolve].
  • Mists of Pandaria Hotfix (2014-01-21): Resolved an issue for the following abilities that resulted in damage being calculated incorrectly when used against targets with a greater than 75% reduction to damage from armor.
  • Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.4.0 (2013-09-10):
    • Characters in a tanking specialization now generates 40% more threat.
    • Vengeance now grants Attack Power equal to 1.5% of the damage taken, down from 1.8% (The tooltip said 2% but it was actually 1.8%).
    • Tanks no longer receive Vengeance from many persistent area damage effects (standing in the fire) or from missed attacks (dodging and parrying an attack will continue to work as it has before).
    • Vengeance gains from being critically hit have been reduced by 50%.
    • There are now diminishing returns on Vengeance gains while tanking multiple targets. Each additional target grants progressively less Vengeance.
    • So as not to affect Challenge Mode leader boards, the above Vengeance changes will not apply there. For Challenge Modes, Vengeance will continue to work as it did in patch 5.3.
  • Mists of Pandaria Hotfix (2013-01-08): Attack Power gained from Vengeance is now capped at the player's maximum health.
  • Mists of Pandaria Hotfix (2012-09-28): Vengeance now ignores overkill damage.
  • Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.0.4 (2012-08-28): Vengeance has been reworked and no longer has a cap. Now grants 2% of unmitigated damage taken as attack power for 20 seconds.
Previous effect: Each time you take damage, you gain 5% of the damage taken as attack power, up to a maximum of 10% of your health.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.3.2 (2012-01-31): Vengeance is no longer triggered by receiving damage from other players.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.3.0 (2011-11-29): Vengeance has been redesigned slightly. It no longer ramps up slowly at the beginning of a fight. Instead, the first melee attack taken by the tank generates Vengeance equal to 33% of the damage taken by that attack. In addition, as it updates periodically during the fight, it's always set to at least 33% of the damage taken by the tank in the last 2 seconds. It still climbs from that point at the rate it did previously, still decays when damage is not taken, and still cannot exceed a maximum based on the health and Stamina of the tank.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.0.3a (2010-11-23): Druid: Vengeance is no longer cleared on exiting Bear Form, and instead is cleared upon entering Cat Form.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): Added.
