WAR (possibly short for Warcraft Archive) is the custom archive format used for Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and its expansion.
However, the format was very simple and third-party tools were eventually made to open these files. The MPQ format was created as a replacement and first used with the release of Diablo and made its way to future game releases.
Despite this format being used for Warcraft II, the Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition release uses the MPQ format.
