This article contains lore or information taken from Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and/or its manual.

The following is an overview of units appearing in Warcraft: Orcs & Humans. Units are either trained at buildings or summoned by spell-casting units. The units available to each faction have similar or identical abilities, except for Wounded and The Dead, which are grouped together here for convenience. The biggest difference are the spells available to each faction.

Details[]

HP and MP[]

All units and buildings are given an HP bar. So long as the HP value is greater than 0, the unit will remain in the game.

Spellcasters (and non-trainable units such as Medivh) are given an MP bar and recover 1 MP for every 40 frames (which should work out to every 1 game second).

Summoned units are also given an MP bar, but this behaves differently. This works as a timer for how long the unit has before they start to lose health and die. The default value for how long a unit will last is 45. This means for ever 45 frames the unit will lose 1 MP (This starts at 255). This works out to 4 minutes and 46.9 seconds in game time, assuming 40 frames is equal to 1 game second. Once the MP bar runs out, the summoned unit will lose 5 HP for every 45 frames that passes, until it finally dies.

Gold, Wood and Build Time[]

Units require a fixed amount of resources and time to build.

  • Combing through WAR.exe, all these values are stored in a range of 0-255. The game multiplies these values by 10 when using them in the game
    • Curiously, while the Warcraft Unit Editor does multiply the gold, wood and time costs for units and buildings, it does not for research and upgrades.
  • Most units that cannot be built in-game are given gold costs, as seen in the table below: [1]
Unit Cost ()
Dragon 0
Skeleton (Orc) 100
Scorpion, Slime, Spider 200
Skeleton (Neutral) 400
Brigand 500
Ogre 900
Fire Elemental 1500
Daemon, Water Elemental 2000
Garona, Griselda, Lothar, Medivh, Wounded 2500

Damage and Armor[]

Units can deal two types of damage: Basic Damage is reduced by the target's Armor, while Piercing Damage is not. For example, if a Footman (Basic Damage 9, Piercing Damage 1) hits a Grunt (Armor 2), he will always deal (9-2)+1=8 damage.

Sword/Axe upgrades affect all units' Basic Damage, except for the Catapults (which are already maxed out at 255 dmg) and Archers/Spearmen (They gain bonus Piercing Damage from Arrow/Spear upgrades).

  • These values have been extracted using the Warcraft Unit Editor v1.50 utility.
  • Note that, unlike in Warcraft II, there is no random factor involved; an attack will always deal a set amount of damage.
  • All attacks except Catapult projectiles have a 20% chance of missing and dealing no damage.[2]

Cooldown[]

Cooldown refers to how many frames a unit requires before it can attack again. Assuming 40 frames = 1 game second, a Footman and Grunt can do up to 10 damage per second, while a Catapult requires a full 8 seconds before it can fire again.

Sight[]

"Sight" refers to a unit's sight radius - the values listed below only apply when the unit is stationary; mobile units always have a sight radius of 2. This information was acquired through in-game testing.

Priority[]

When automatically choose a target, units will seek out those that have higher priority ratings.

  • Catapults have the highest priority value. Given they have one of the best DPS values of all the units and their incredible splash damage, this should come as no surprise. This is followed up by Daemons and Water Elementals for similar reasons.
  • Peons and Peasants have a priority higher than most attack units in the game, which helps to explain why in later Orc campaign missions that attack units will appear near the Peon line and target them rather than nearby combat units.
  • Given their access to magic, spellcasters have a slightly higher priority than regular combat units; it is advised to keep them as far back as possible while attacking and defending.

Neutral Units[]

Neutral and Hero units cannot be built or summoned, and appear only in Dungeon maps (missions 4 and 8 of each campaign and Custom Games).

Unused Units[]

The game contains some data for an unused unit, the Dragon (Unit ID#s 20, 29 and 30). If added to the game, it has no unit sprite, no attack sprite (such as arrow, or fireball) and reveals an Ogre portrait and Orc Command Buttons set when selected. It can move, die and attack, but does no damage and has no attached sound effect.
