There are many, many templates in use in Wowpedia and these are only subset, hopefully representing the most commonly used ones. If you feel that a template belongs on this page, do not hesitate to add it.
- The Template namespace always has all templates in the wiki, unsorted
- Category:Templates should have all templates in the wiki, categorized.
Wiki templates provide a means to insert the same content over and over in different (or the same) pages. This saves editors the hassle of duplicating the same text again and again, and also helps ensure consistency. See Help:Template for further information on using and creating templates.
Templates are generally shown with the format required to use the template (i.e. Horde Icon
). Clicking the template name takes you to the template's page, where you can see what it looks like and how it is used.

|
Citations needed[]
- Source needed displays a well-visible banner and places the article in Category:Articles needing citations
- fact inserts a small link in the text and places the article in Category:Articles needing citations
Cleanup[]
<reasons>
Add to articles or sections that require editing attention. This will include them in Category:Articles to clean up.
Please try and add reasons - this will help editors to change what is wrong or add what is not there without having to ask the user who tagged the page.
Dead links[]
- dead link can be placed inside references and after external links to indicate that the link is permanently non-functional. An optional argument can be used to pass the full url of an archived copy. If no url is passed, the page will be added to Category:Articles with dead external links. Before adding this template, consider searching for an archived copy of the linked page (such as through the Wayback Machine), or in the case of very unimportant external links, simply deleting them.
[dead link]
[dead link - archived copy]
Deletion templates[]
Delete, Speedydelete, Terminate etc. are used as part of the article deletion process. See delete, Terminate.

|
Merge[]
<target article>
Add to articles that should be merged into one article. This will include them in Category:Merge candidates. Further elaboration on the articles' discussion pages would be helpful, such as suggesting which name both articles should be listed under.
Move[]
<target article>
Add to articles that should be moved to another name (Category:Move candidates), in accordance with the Naming Policy. While many moves can be made immediately, if moving will be an involved process (as with a category) or there is debate as to what the article should be called, it is best to receive some feedback first.
Outdated[]
- ood-section for sections within articles
Removed[]
- Classic only, Removedfromgame, Removedfrombeta, or Removedfromptr where appropriate.
- rfg-section and Classic only-section for sections within articles.
Split[]

Stubs[]
When a page has little or no useful information, then it is a stub.
- stub-section for sections within articles
Please add any available information to this section.
Talk pages[]

(from Talkheader)
This template can be added to an article's talk page where discussion about the issue in general is overwhelming editorial concerns regarding the article in particular. See Wowpedia:Talk page guidelines for more info.
Wikify[]
- Wikify
General wiki templates[]
- See also: Category:General wiki templates
Icons[]
Note that all these icons appear to the left of the text left edge. Use them only in indented sections (e.g. after a ":").
- icon-information
- icon-exclamation
- icon-lightbulb
- icon-shortcut
Category helpers[]
- Use <realm type> to easily categorize US servers. (timezone = Eastern, Central, Pacific, etc....) (server = article name minus Server:, helps alphabetize categories)
- Use <realm type> to easily categorize EU servers. (language = English, French, German, etc....) (server = article name minus Server:, helps alphabetize categories)
- Use <article type> at the top of category pages that shouldn't be used to tell people what category they should be using.
- Use bigcat at the bottom of very large (nearly or over 200 articles) categories:
|
- Note that destination category is no longer required as of the MediaWiki 1.7 upgrade. You can now use regular
#redirect :Category:destination category
redirects. Old/deprecated categories should never be redirected per the category policy.
Clear below break before starting[]
- You can use clear instead of the HTML tag that clears space below things like images, pictures and tables, so stuff doesn't begin until the bottom of the image, picture or table box.
- You can also use <left> or <right> to clear only left or right floats
Line spacing[]
- spc adds a moderate space between two paragraphs, or between items in a bullet list. The spacing is about 75% of a regular line height.
Columns[]
To easily put content in columns, use col-begin, col, and col-end.
- For example
col-begin 3 First column 3 Second 3 Third col-end
- Yields
- First column
- Second
- Third
Disambiguation[]
- Use disambig, if a page has a chance of being confused with a page of a similar name but different content, a disambiguation page may be in order. See that page for more info on creating one and linking to it.
- However, sometimes a disabiguation page is not appropriate, but a short note at the top may still be necessary. for can be useful for this situation.
the original 40-man raid introduced in Patch 1.11
- For the original 40-man raid introduced in Patch 1.11, see Naxxramas (Classic).
Tables of Contents[]
Though discouraged (see Wowpedia:Manual of Style), you can float the table of contents of a page to the right with tocright
Tabs[]
If you want to make a nice looking tab to clearly indicate what to click, like Discussion, you can use the following:
- articletab – Page
- categorytab – Category
- discussiontab – Discussion
- edittab – Edit
- helptab – Help page
- historytab – History
- projectpagetab – Project page
- specialpagetab – Special page
- templatetab – Template
- userpagetab – User page
- viewsourcetab – View source
Template links[]
Make example template code for templates with a link to them:
- Simple template (i.e. <template>)
See also[]
Add references to other articles using seealso. For example, to add two references to a page, use Health regeneration:
- See also: Health regeneration, Mana regeneration
For consistency, it's recommended that you add a section at the bottom titled "See also"
Example, Example/Begin, Example/End[]
<small text>
can be used for very small examples, but often you will want to pull in substantial pieces of other pages or templates, in which case you can use LOTS of text, probably multiline
:
LOTS of text, probably multiline |
Page actions[]
- <pagename> can be used to create a link for editing a page, e.g.
Wowpedia:Templates
creates [edit].
- <your text> creates a link that purges the cache of a page, i.e. forces a reload of all pulled-in templates. Sensible texts would be e.g. purge page cache, update subpages, refresh templates.
Smileys[]
World of Warcraft templates[]
- See also: Category:WoW utility templates
Money[]
Multiple ways to do money exist, but only a few are practical, and here they are:
- 123 45 67
<123>
- 123 67
<123>
- 25 50

- 35 10

- 10 48 32

- 100

Currency[]
Similar to money, there are now many other types of currencies in WoW, where you exchange items as a currency for another item. For example:
- 1
<1>
- 1
<1>

- See also: Category:Navigation templates
These templates take one parameter "class" which should be replaced by the class name; "Mage", "Warrior" etc. This is used to create links back to class-specific pages.
- <class>

Quality colors[]
The following templates change the color of the links. In case there is such a concern, note that each link, when moused over, has the underline in the typical link color. For instance, if a link does not exist, the underline is red; if it does exist, the underline is blue.
NOTE: Color for Artifact items used to be red and is currently undecided by Blizzard as there are no items of this type in-game yet, however GetItemQualityColor API function currently returns 0.90196..., 0.8, 0.50196..., "|cffe6cc80" (shown in that color) for quality=6 (Artifact), which gives some idea. Legendary items are said to have "(Color Undecided)" according to Item Basics at www.wow-europe.com, but have been seen in-game.
For simple quality links for use in other templates, use the following format:
- the template name indicates the item has a quality
- the first argument is the quality of a given item
- the second argument is the name of a given item's article
Example Result <WoW Token> token <Heirloom> heirloom <Artifact> artifact <Legendary> legendary <Epic> epic <Rare> rare <Uncommon> uncommon <Common (quality)> common <Poor> poor
Simple color replacement templates deprecated using styling in MediaWiki:Common.css:
Class Color Code qc-token WoW Token <span class="qc-token">WoW Token</span> qc-heirloom Heirloom <span class="qc-heirloom">Heirloom</span> qc-artifact Artifact <span class="qc-artifact">Artifact</span> qc-legendary Legendary <span class="qc-legendary">Legendary</span> qc-epic Epic <span class="qc-epic">Epic</span> qc-rare Rare <span class="qc-rare">Rare</span> qc-uncommon Uncommon <span class="qc-uncommon">Uncommon</span> qc-common Common <span class="qc-common">Common</span> qc-poor Poor <span class="qc-poor">Poor</span>
Reputation colors[]
The <rep level> template changes the color of text based on the reputation selected.
Example Result exalted
exalted revered
revered honored
honored friendly
friendly neutral
neutral unfriendly
unfriendly hostile
hostile hated
hated
You can also color custom text as well. For example: hated
results in very hated.
Colored text[]
You can also easily color inline text with text. This template comes preloaded with some common colors - "emote", "say", "yell", "whisper", and "blizz" but many other colors can be supplied as well.
For example:
results in
An Unknown Voice whispers: Tell yourself again that these are not truly your friends.
Item links[]
By default, linking an item will provide its icon and quality color, surrounded by brackets. To make a plain item link, type :
after the [[
.
Example Result Azuresong Mageblade
[Azuresong Mageblade] :Azuresong Mageblade
Azuresong Mageblade
Ability links[]
By default, linking an ability will provide its icon and be surrounded by brackets with a spell color. To make a plain ability link, type :
after the [[
.
Example Result Frostfire Bolt
[Frostfire Bolt] :Frostfire Bolt
Frostfire Bolt
