The subject of this article was removed from World of Warcraft in patch 7.3.0.

  • Used to upgrade Legion Legendary items to item level 970.

Writhing Essences drop from the following sources while you have a quest that needs them:

  • Weekly Mythic+ Chest, always provided 20 even if cleared a 15+ dungeon.
  • Tomb of Sargeras bosses, 4-7 each (drops for all difficulties, including LFR)
  • Emissary caches drop 0-7; caches that are in the inventory before grabbing the quest will not drop them.
  • Daily Legion Heroic dungeon, drops 5 essences
  • Weekly PvP rewards; earn 1,500 Honor for 2v2, 3v3 and Rated Battlegrounds will provide 7 essences each

This item is an objective of N [110] Unsettled Power and N [110] Unsettled Power.

Patch changes[]

  • Legion Patch 7.3.0 (2017-08-29): Removed.
  • Legion Hotfix (2017-06-22): For "Unsettled Power", Writhing Essences now drop as a currency, instead of a quest item. Entering your Class Hall or Dalaran will convert your existing progress to the new currency.
  • Legion Patch 7.2.5 (2017-06-13): Added.
